What Is Affiliate Marketing? An Affiliate Marketing Beginners’ Guide

affiliate marketing No Comments »

You’ve no doubt heard the term affiliate marketing whilst browsing the internet. It’s often touted as the number one way to make money online at the moment and for good reason – top affiliate marketers make very good money. So, what is affiliate marketing and is it here to stay?

The phrase “affiliate marketing” is used to describe a marketing system which uses affiliates to make sales in exchange for a percentage of the profit made. For example: Acme Compuer Company want to sell more computers, so they offer Bob a cut of the profits on any sale that he brings to them. Acme sell more than they would have done without Bob, and Bob makes money without having to worry about customer service, stock, or handling the cash.

It’s very possible for you or I to set up an online affiliate marketing business and be making a very good living with a relatively short period of time. Don’t let this fool you into thinking that it’s an easy ride though – you’re going to have to learn the ropes well. Affiliate marketing is a very competitive arena these days and, whilst success is within anyone’s reach, it’s not without it’s pitfalls.

One of the largest affiliate marketing areas is in digital products – products which can be instantly downlaoded, like ebooks. These product have large profit margins and allow for greater commissions. Many affiliate marketers get started by promoting digital products from websites such as Clickbank.

As you first start to wonder “What is affiliate marketing” and research the possibilities, you’ll no-doubt come across many digital products. Whilst these are probably the best place to get started, physical products can produce very lucrative businesses too.

If you’re considering studying and undertaking affiliate marketing as a possible income, you should make sure that you’re fully aware of the pitfalls. Affiliate marketing is very competitive at the moment and without knowing a few simple but very necessary techniques, you won’t last long and may even end up losing a considerable amount of cash in your attempts to get going.

To get started with affiliate marketing, you should find a very good affiliate marketing study program. This is easier said than done, as there are many bogus ebooks and courses out there, which profess to be the next big affiliate or interet marketing mecca, but never actually deliver. When it’s time to buy study materials, be very wary.

What is affiliate marketing going to do for you? As with anything like this, that all depends on you, but affiliate marketing success can be very liberating, allowing you to build an internet based business, work from wherever you want to be, and enjoy more free time.

For some great beginners’ info about how to avoid the pitfalls of affiliate marketing, read Chris Denver’s Affiliate Marketing Journey (you’d pay a lot of money for some of the stuff that Chris gives away about half way down this page!). My Guide to Utilising Affiliate Programs

When deciding on affiliate programs to join look out for affiliate programs that offer a range of products – this will make it easier for you to earn further commissions when your customers come back to order something else.

Build your site around a topic you enjoy. Being a webmaster requires much time. It’s very important you build your website around a topic that intrigues you and can spend the required time on.

Think about topics that you find intriguing, and that you have a lot of information on. This will make it more enjoyable to write about that topic to clients and share what you know.

Once you’ve chosen a topic for your website, you have already identified who you want to market it to; you’re in right stead to join an affiliate program that sells products to the audience you identified.

Keep fine tuning your focus until you find your niche that makes your site unique. For example instead of focusing on sports, make your website about a team you favour or instead of internet marketing choose to make your site about ezine publishing.

Pick affiliate programs that offer a multi-layer commission structure, where you get paid a commission on the sales of people you refer to the program, or programs that give you the opportunity to earn a residual income.

Keep note of your promotion campaigns. This is essential in helping you identify which of the ad copies makes the most money and which of the marketing techniques was most beneficial.

Generate traffic through repeat customers by making your site a valuable resource. Publish your own articles, tutorials, eBooks, and your ezine archive, as well material for promotion given to you by the affiliate programs you’ve become a member of.

Have a recommended products or links page where you share with your visitors the benefits that the products they choose to promote will have on them – how these products could help.

To increase your commissions promoting two-tier affiliate programs, provide your visitors with a well put together affiliate programs page where you can vouch for specific affiliate opportunities.

Refresh your relationship with your clients by giving them free e-mail courses. The courses you decide to use can be those provided to you by the affiliate programs you promote, or you can create your own free e-mail courses from articles or tutorials.

Publish an ezine; publishing ezine’s is a great way to establish yourself as a guru or a viable resource in your field which will generate more commissions for you as your subscribers reply to your recommendations.

Choose The Best Affiliate Programs – An Insiders Guide

Choosing the best affiliate programs is about choosing something that you know about, or have an opinion on. Best of all, choose the best affiliate program for you because you are passionate about a topic. The more interested you are in the product or service, the more convincing you are going to be when writing about it.

It is important to remember that the best affiliate programs will be those where you can be more specialized about your choices. Then it will be more likely the people you want to target about the product will think it is relevant to them. You will have noticed that I have used the word “relevant”.

Think about how you use the Internet. You probably skim lots of the emails that you receive. Most of the time you delete almost all of the messages because they are not relevant to you. If you don’t choose the best affiliate programs for your readers they will ignore your messages too.

There will be some messages that you pay particular attention to because they are from experts in certain fields. Fields you are interested in and you tend to open these first. You are looking for the best affiliate programs that will hook your interest and expertise.

The key to the best affiliate programs is to keep on topic and engage your audience. Relevance is all!

Where To Go For Your Best Affiliate Programs

You won’t be surprised to know that there are sites that specialize in offering products that you can sell on a commission basis. The places to start looking for the best affiliate programs are:

– PayDotCom
– ClickBank
– Commission Junction

Signing up for any of these is very straightforward. You will be asked for personal information, but don’t be put off by this, the services are secure. Remember – some of this information will be so that they can pay the commission over to your account.

You will probably need to set up a PayPal account before you sign up. Please note, it does take a little time for your PayPal account to go “live” as they will send some information to your bank account, which you will have to use to finalize your account details. I suggest, therefore, that you get this set up as soon as possible whilst you are looking for the best affiliate programs for your business.

Short circuit the frustration factor by skimming the sites before you sit down to sign up, and make sure everything is in place for the process to be as streamlined as possible. I think that more people give up on affiliate marketing because they get frustrated and just don’t get to complete the process.

Choosing the best affiliate programs is only the first step but you need to get it right from the start.

Your Guide To Affiliate Networks

affiliate networks No Comments »

Having an online business means that you probably want to get as much out of your website as possible. When you provide a link on your website to a vendor, and a visitor links to that page from your site, you can earn a commission. Often, this commission is based on a sale made, but it does not have to be. You earn the commission on the basis that you have referred this customer to the vendor through different affiliate networks.

Most affiliate programs are not too complicated to join. Many companies will have a terms of service agreement ready for your review. You’ll also have to choose between linkshare and shareasale programs. Once you’ve made the decision between the two, you can link to the vendor’s site through your own. Each click that goes to the vendor from your website, resulting in a sale (or not, depending) will end in a commission.

There are so many ways to make money online. You just have to be innovative and combine dedication with hard work. Before you choose an affiliate program, understand what your niche is.

Knowing what you enjoy doing will help you create a website around such a niche. This will make working less of a chore. You’ll find that when you have a website based on a particular niche, you’ll be able to choose your affiliate partners easier.

Building your online reputation is important in receiving web traffic. Consequently, web traffic is essential to having affiliate success. If no one is visiting your website, no one will click on your affiliate links.

When deciding on which affiliate programs to join, think about what’s hot now. What are people looking for? Technological products often have higher commissions. People are often looking for good deals on anything and everything. Find out what’s selling online, and find out how to join their affiliate networks.

Beginners Guide to Make Money with Affiliate Marketing

One of the easiest ways to get started as an affiliate is Clickbank. The reason this is so easy is that anybody can sign up without having to have an existing website. All you need is a physical address and an email address. Clickbank will help you generate the affiliate link that you can use in any number of different websites or webpages. The other main benefit to Clickbank is that the payouts are relatively high. So, instead of a small percent of a physical product, you’re usually making 50 percent or more on a product typically priced $ 50 to $ 99.

Most affiliate networks require a website and an application process. One of the more well known affiliate networks is commission junction. Google now has an affiliate program as well. You can also find dozens of other affiliate networks by doing some simple searching on the internet for keywords like affiliate network or affiliate programs.

Another popular type of affiliate marketing is called CPA which stands for Cost Per Acquisition. This is a scenario in which the company whose products or services you’re promoting is going to pay you for a lead. So, when a visitor to your site completes some action, you get paid. This may be as simple as someone putting in an email address all the way through someone completing a survey or multi-page application.

You can promote affiliate programs through classified ad websites. Some easy ones to use for affiliate programs are,,, and check out as many local classified ad sites sponsored by either local newspapers, tv or radio. The benefit to these types of sites are that they have built-in promotion. The radio, tv and newspaper will typically promote through advertising their own classified sites which means they will get traffic. Craigslist is also a good option but must be used with care simply because Craiglist will “ghost” your ads which basically means they won’t make it to the category listings on Cragislist which will severely limit their visibility.

Article marketing is another way to drive some significant traffic to your website. The benefits to article marketing include the fact that many of the article websites rank very well with the search engines and usually get a significant amount of traffic internally as well. This means that you can submit articles to some of the more popular directories and have those articles read and reviewed. Your author profile or your resources box at the bottom of the article can include your link to your website. Some article sites have more strict guidelines on what you can or can’t use those for, so be sure to read the policies before you submit your articles.

You can use social media websites to promote an affiliate program as well. Some social media sites that are easy to use and easy to setup are,, and several others sites similar to this that allow individual users to setup free accounts and create pages with whatever content they choose. These social sites typically have guidelines and some have regulations that might affect what you do to promote specific affiliate products. If you provide good solid advice and content, you’ll be ok with most of these types of sites.

Blogging is perhaps the easiest way to get a website created without having to learn html or some new software. Blogs can be used to discuss benefits of ownership of a specific product (which you’ll promote as an affiliate) or some service that you can also promote as an affiliate. One key to success with blogging is consistency. If you can be consistent with your blogging, you’ll add a lot of power to strategy.

You can develop a more traditional website which would be similar to wordpress on a self hosted site. In fact, there would be no difference for the most part assuming you’re using a program like wordpress to manage your content. The SEO tools and plugins that come with wordpress on a self-hosted blog scenario are very good. The idea here is to generate the kind of content that attracts people and keeps people on the site. Some ideas for how to generate this type of content can be found on and which are two excellent resource for how to make money using a blog.

Pay per click advertising can support driving traffic through to a page that you control the content, such as a landing or squeeze page or can also redirect traffic directly from the advertisement itself through to the affiliate site with your affiliate ID in the link itself. This method is called direct linking. Another scenario is to send the traffic from pay per click to an information site or a theme based site where you’re going to rely on the fact that a certain percentage of people that visit that site are going to take action.

This article is meant to simply introduce you to some of the ways to promote affiliate products and services. If you’re serious about pursuing any of these methods, use the internet to find great content. Spend some time on some affiliate marketing forums and ask around what other people are doing and how they’re successful. Remember, though, nothing can replace actually getting out there and trying these things for yourself. There’s only so much you’ll be able to do without trying this first hand. Good luck with your efforts.

Brian uses his own blog and website to promote affiliate marketing. He does this through blogging, search engine optimization and through pay per click. If you’d like to learn more about making money as an affiliate, check out Brian’s website.

The lifeblood on any online business is traffic and visibility. To get the most traffic, merchants create affiliate programs, literally a ‘virtual sales team’ to help promote their site and products. Anyone can sign up to be an affiliate to most affiliate programs. You promote their products, they do all the customer service, shipping, and refunds of the product. You promote, and when the merchant makes a sale from a customer that you referred, you make a commission.

The merchant may choose to pay a flat fee or a percentage of the product’s price. Let’s say you’re promoting a $ 149 product, and the merchant pays you a 50% commission. For every sale you refer, you earn a $ 74.50 commission. To track the people that you refer to the site, you’re given an affiliate link. These are links that are coded with identifiable information so that the merchant knows that the customer came from your link and you are credited with the sale. Some merchants pay as high as 75% commission.

Affiliate marketing is probably the easiest way to start an online business. You don’t need to have a website, products, a customer service or shipping department. You simply send traffic to the merchant’s website, and earn commissions. While it is easy to get started in affiliate marketing, you still need to learn, understand and implement some basic business concepts to be successful.

Some of the things you will need to learn are:

1. Choosing the products that are best aligned to your chosen market
2. How to drive targeted traffic to your website
3. How to market your business or products
4. How to build an email list of potential customers
5. How to follow-up with your list and convert them to sales
6. How to write pre-sell and sales copy that converts
7. How to turn customers into repeat customers

All of these skills can be applied to most business models, whether it’s affiliate marketing, selling your own products, or running an offline business.

What is the best way to select an affiliate program?

There are very few jobs in life that require so little time and effort in comparison to the rewards. Initially, while you are learning, you will need to put in maximum effort to get started. What you put into it will determine what you get out of it.

Here are a few tips to picking out the right affiliate marketing opportunity for you. When choosing products, don’t be afraid to choose niche products, or products that appeal only to a small number of people. Build your website, blog, or other marketing materials around the demographic you’re after. If you’re selling life insurance or retirement planning, you’ll want content that connects with mature people rather than the online gaming crowd.

There are many products with affiliate programs at,, commission junction, and In addition, there’s others, such as MoreNiche, JoeBucks and many more. Just join those programs and browse their marketplaces to find products you are interested in selling.

Single-Tier, Two-Tier, and Multi-Tier Affiliate Marketing

These types of affiliate marketing are based on the different levels or tiers in the affiliate network by which payments are made. These structures offer more incentive and further motivate the affiliates to work harder and very quickly build a fleet of affiliates under the merchant.

In a single-tier affiliate marketing program, the affiliates are only paid based on the direct sales or traffic he has referred to the merchant.

In two-tier affiliate marketing programs, the affiliate is paid for the direct lead or sales he refers to the merchant, plus every lead or sales referred by affiliates who joined the affiliate program through his affiliate link.

Multi-tier affiliate marketing works the same way. The affiliate gets additional commission for affiliates they refer in different levels of the affiliate network, such as, 1st time sales, repeat sales, etc.

Residual Income Affiliate Marketing

In residual income affiliate marketing, the affiliate gets paid for the customer he refers to the merchant’s site and for the customer he refers who returns to the site for a repeat sale or to purchase a different product.

As you can see, there are numerous ways to make money with affiliate marketing, whether by promoting merchant’s products or by promoting the affiliate program and getting people to sign up through your affiliate link or a combination of both.

Building Traffic – The Foundation For Success

Now that you know what affiliate marketing is, you’ll need to know the best ways that affiliate marketers use to promote products. The following are four popular ways to promote affiliate products.

Email Marketing:

Opt-in email marketing is a very effective method of promoting your affiliate products. To do this, you need what is called a landing page. You drive traffic to your landing page and then provide just enough information to get them to subscribe to the affiliate’s opt-in mailing list. You then follow up by email, sending a series of emails, usually by using an autoresponder. You can use your opt-in mailing list to promote different products over time and earn from repeat business from existing customers. Successful affiliate marketers will tell you that there is nothing more profitable than having an opt-in mailing list.

Establishing a relationship of trust and credibility with your list will boost your conversion rates and make the list very responsive to your offers.

Content Websites and Blogs

You can market your affiliate products through relevant content on your websites or blogs. Relevant content would include articles, reviews of products, and other tools to keep your visitors coming back. You just create the content and include your affiliate links and/or banners where appropriate. Don’t make the mistake of just throwing up a page of affiliate banners and links with no relevant content and expect to make sales. This type of site is rarely successful.

Blogs can also be used in conjunction with websites to drive traffic to the websites. You create your website, create a blog and include links to your website in your blog. Blogs, such as and are spidered by Google frequently and help you to get your main website listed in search engines. Just update your blogs frequently and then go to and ping the blogs to keep content updated in the search engines and to drive traffic to the websites you have linked in your blogs.

Data Feed Sites

Data feed sites are automated online stores with scripts built in to automatically pull in product information from the merchant’s database. They are automatically encoded with your affiliate link. All the affiliate needs to do to make sales from these sites is to drive traffic to them.

Pay-Per-Click Marketing

Pay per click (PPC) is an advertising technique used on websites, advertising networks, and search engines. Advertisers bid on “keywords” that they believe their target market (people they think would be interested in their offer) would type in the search bar when they are looking for their type of product or service. For example, if an advertiser sells red widgets, he/she would bid on the keyword “red widgets”, hoping a user would type those words in the search bar, see their ad, click on it and buy. These ads are called “sponsored links” or “sponsored ads” and appear next to and sometimes above the natural or organic results on the page. The advertiser pays only when the user clicks on the ad.

While many companies exist in this space, Google AdWords and Yahoo! Search Marketing, which was formerly Overture, are the largest network operators as of 2006. In the spring of 2006, MSN started beta testing their own PPC service, MSN adCenter. Depending on the search engine, minimum prices per click start at US$ 0.01 (up to US$ 0.50). Very popular search terms can cost much more on popular engines. Some of the pay-per-click programs available are:

Google AdWords
Yahoo! Search Marketing
Enhance Interactive
Microsoft adCenter

Now that you’ve seen some examples of how to best promote affiliate products, you’ve got to figure out where your traffic is coming from. It is essential to know which of your advertising methods work for you and which ones don’t. You will need to tweak and experiment with your ads if you don’t have a good response rate. The key is to have a consistent strategy… a plan of action.

It takes time to build traffic and build an email list. You often don’t notice the results of your efforts the first couple of months. Remember, it takes patience, strategy and consistency. Do something every day to build on and improve your marketing efforts. Soon you will begin to see the results and sales from your efforts start pouring in.

How to Make a Website:

This video shows you How to Start Affiliate Marketing in India.

Have you ever thought that you could make money by referring products from an e-commerce site ?

Yes or maybe Not!

It is possible through – ‘Affiliate Marketing’.

Affiliate Marketing is simply: A method of earning a commission by promoting other people’s product.

This is How it works:-

1. You choose a type of product that you want to promote.
2. Register for the affiliate program.
3. Get an affiliate link (which is a special link that tracks all the purchases made by the people using your link).
4. Promote this link.
5. Earn a commission when people buy from it.

There a dozen of affiliate programs available on the internet. But the most popular ones in India is from Amazon and Flipkart.

The best part about Amazon is that:

You earn a commission even when someone makes a purchase on not only the product you’re promoting but on any one or more product that the person buys from amazon within 24 hours, after clicking your link.

This means that you’ll get a commission on not only the product that you’re promoting but on all the products sold in amazon.

This is because when a person clicks on your affiliate link, a special ‘cookie’ gets stored in the browser for 24 hours and all the purchases made by him in that time limit, is credited to you!

But, How to promote this link ?

You can do it, in a number of ways. But the best and the most reliable way is by creating your own website. Let’s start

Step 1: Choose the type of product you want to promote

First visit this page on amazon and select a category.

Choose a category in which you’re most interested in.

This is very important because what you choose here, will be the topic of your website in the next step.

Choosing a topic helps you to write similar kind of articles for your audience easily. This is also called as ‘choosing your niche’.

Once you’ve selected your topic/category, you can go to the next step.

STEP 2: Creating a Website

We’ve done another video which will help you to launch your website in 5-10 mins.

Watch that tutorial here:

STEP 3: Sign-up for the Affiliate Program

Now, once you’ve created your own website, you can sign-up for the affiliate program.

You can choose an affiliate program based on the highest commissions paid by them for your topic (the category you’ve chosen).

Select the item you’re going to promote

After you become an affiliate, the next step is to select the item you’re going to promote.

If you already know the type of product you’re going to promote, then go ahead by searching the product name in the ‘search box’.

If you don’t have an idea about the product you’re going to promote, then you can

Follow these simple steps:

1. First go to amazon India bestsellers page.
2. Select your category from the left side.
3. You’ll see the best selling products on this page. Now, choose the one that has a rating above 4 stars.
4. Also, take a look at the features and read the user reviews to get an idea about the product.

If you like it, go to the next step,”Writing an article about the product.”

Write content about the product

Now you can start writing an article based on the product you’ve chosen.

Let me show you a type of article you can write:-

1. Go to the WordPress site, you’ve created.
2. Click New & Post
3. Now write an article about the product you’ve chosen (You can also learn the different types of content you can write, by clicking here).
4. Make sure that you’ve read all the product features and user reviews to list down the pros & cons of the product.
5. Add an image.

Now comes the important part :- Adding your Affiliate Link

1. First find a ‘Buy button’ from Google images.
2. Then add it in your article.
3. Now go to the product page in amazon and click ‘link to this page’ which appears in the top grey bar.
4. Right click in the ‘live preview’ option and copy the link address (This is your affiliate link).
5. Go to the article and click the ‘Buy button’ & then click ‘Edit’.
6. Select link to custom URL and paste your affiliate link.
7. Also, check open link in a new tab.
8. Click Update and click Publish to post the article.

Now go to the article and click the buy button. Clicking it, will take you to the amazon product page.

This means your affiliate link is working.

Now when a person makes a purchase by clicking this buy button, you’ll get a commission.

This is how you can promote products, using your affiliate link.

Quick Tip:- Make sure you write article which provides some kind of benefit to your readers. This will attract more visitors to your site.
